With Delhi’s air quality level improving, AQI coming up at 233 on Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched an initiative to allow residents to explore and appreciate the city’s vast historical and cultural heritage through a series of heritage walks.

The programme, aimed at fostering a deeper connection with Delhi’s rich history, kicked off with the inaugural walk, “Safarnama Minar-e-Zarreen,” at the historic Feroz Shah Kotla complex.

The Feroz Shah Kotla, built in 1354 AD under the Tughlaq dynasty, is one of Delhi’s iconic historical landmarks. The inaugural heritage walk, which began at 8.30 am, was attended by MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar and senior officials. The walk provided participants with a detailed exploration of the site’s architectural grandeur and historical significance.

Speaking at the event, Ashwani Kumar stressed the importance of such initiatives in helping people connect with the history and cultural fabric of their city. “Through the Heritage Walk programme, we aim to bring history alive and encourage people to appreciate the cultural heritage of Delhi,” Kumar said.

Reflecting on his experience, he said, “As a participant in today’s walk, I gained detailed insights into the history of the citadel city. The walk combined fascinating anecdotes, stories from history and a sense of pride about the glorious heritage we inherit. It was overwhelming to stand near Ashoka’s pillar and reflect on his message of Dhamma, respect for all, and piety, which still remains relevant today.”

The Heritage Walk programme will take place on the first and third Saturdays of each month, with two sessions: one at 8 am and another at 11.30 am. The walks are open to the public and no prior registration is required, making it an accessible and inclusive programme for history and culture enthusiasts of all ages. Participants will be guided by experts who will share in-depth knowledge and fascinating stories about the city’s iconic landmarks.

In addition to learning about historical sites, the walks will include interactive activities designed to engage participants. The MCD hopes the initiative will promote greater awareness and appreciation for Delhi’s heritage, particularly among the younger generation.
