An elderly couple died after a fire broke out at a residential building in Safdarjung Enclave on Wednesday evening, police officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Govind Ram Nagpal (80), a retired employee of Kelvinator, and Sheela Nagpal (78), a retired employee of Vidhya Niketan.

DCP (South West) Surendra Chaudhary said: “We reached the spot after getting information. The fire broke out on the second floor of a residential building in Safdarjung. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames.”

“We received a call regarding a fire at 6:02 am from Safdarjung Enclave. The fire broke on the second floor of a house. The fire spread through domestic articles,” said Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg. The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary, the police said.

“A legal action has been initiated under Section 194 of the BNS,” the DCP said.

Vineet Nagpal, son of the deceased, resides in the USA, while their daughter stays in Paschim Vihar.

Fire breaks out at Udaan Bhawan office complex

Earlier in the day, a fire broke out at the Udaan Bhawan office complex near Safdarjung airport, a DFS official said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

A police team was also rushed to the spot which helped evacuate the building. Udaan Bhawan houses several offices of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

“A call regarding the blaze was received at 12:54 pm following which five fire tenders were pressed into service. The fire was reported from the battery room of the second basement. It is under control now,” the DFS chief said.
