Defence Ministry okays specialised patrol boats, overhaul of T-90 tanks
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the highest decision-making body of the Ministry of Defence, today okayed multiple proposals, including two types of specialised patrol ships, new helicopters for the Coast Guard and overhaul of T-90 tanks and engines of Sukhoi 30-MKI fighter jets.
The DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the acceptance of necessity (AoN) — the first step of the acquisition process — for five capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 21,772 crore. These will augment defence preparedness, the MoD said.
The DAC granted AON for procurement of 31 new water jet fast attack crafts (NWJFACs) for the Indian Navy. These are designed to perform the task of low-intensity maritime operations, surveillance, patrol and search and rescue (SAR) operations close to coast. In addition, these vessels will play an effective role in anti-piracy missions, especially in and around our Island territories.
Besides, the DAC also accorded AoN for procurement of 120 Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC). These vessels are capable to perform multiple roles, including escorting high value units such as aircraft carriers and submarines.
For the Army, the DAC okayed the overhaul of T-72 and T-90 tanks. An overhaul means all major parts of a tank that need replacement are changed.
For the Indian Air Force, the DAC accorded AoN for overhaul of engines of Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft that will enhance the service life of the jet.
The DAC also okayed the AoN for procurement of Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS) comprising self-protection jammers and next-generation radar warning receiver and associated equipment for Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft.
This system will enhance the operational capabilities of jet and protect it from enemy radars and related weapon system while carrying out a mission against enemy targets protected by air defence systems, the MoD said.
Procurement of six Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) for Indian Coast Guard has been accorded an AoN to strengthen the coastal security and surveillance in the coastal areas.
