‘Declare November 1 as Chandigarh Foundation Day’

A representation to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator has sought declaration of November 1 as Chandigarh Foundation Day.

“November 1, 1966, is the date when Chandigarh was legally/constitutionally born as Union Territory and as such, humble prayer is that this day should be declared and observed as UT Chandigarh Foundation Day and celebrations should also take place, in UT as the day is an occasion to remember, acknowledge our own moment in history,” Advocate Ajay Jagga stated in a representation to Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria.

On this day, the State of Haryana was also born and it has declared November 1 as Haryana Foundation Day and this day is celebrated every year by observing it as a holiday, he said.

Similarly, Punjab celebrates Punjab Diwas on this day. However, Chandigarh has forgotten this day and even none pursued the celebration of this day, the representation added.

Jagga prayed that the matter may be examined in the national and public interest, for the purpose of declaring/notifying November 1 as Chandigarh Foundation Day.
