Amritsar: DC reviews plans to upkeep Heritage Street
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sawhney has emphasised the need for enhanced maintenance of Heritage Street and reviewed the proposed memorial gate for Sikh chieftain, Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia. The DC mentioned this during a meeting with officials from in the city.
Chairing the meeting, the the DC emphasised on the importance of maintaining the Heritage Street leading to the Golden Temple. She stressed that all efforts should sincerely be made to ensure hassle-free visit of pilgrims to the holiest Sikh shrine in the world.
She demanded that a design be prepared and budget report presented for the gate to be built in memory of Sikh chieftain Nawab Jassa Singh Ahluwalia at Ghee Mandi Chowk. The legendary Sikh leader, who founded Kapurthala state in 1772, had built a fort in the periphery of the Golden Temple to check invasion from Afghanistan. Municipal Corporation Superintending Engineer Sandeep Singh said whitewashing of over half of the street was completed with financial support from Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sawhney.
