Cross-border drug racket busted, jail warden among 3 held in Amritsar

Day after the seizure of 5 kg heroin, the city police on Thursday busted another cross-border smuggling racket with arrest of three persons and recovery of 4.5 kg of contraband.

Police also confiscated Rs 4.32 lakh of drug money from their possession.

According to officials, the accused include jail warden Gurmej Singh, a resident of Moga, who was posted at Amritsar Central Jail. He allegedly used to sneak in and supply drugs to prisoners, they added.

The other accused have been identified as Akashdeep Singh alias Akash and his brother Satwinderpal Singh aka Satti, both residents of Guru Hargobindpura in Chheharta area.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said during preliminary probe it was found that Akashdeep and his brother had close contacts with Pakistan-based drug peddlers.

“They were using drones to push in drugs from across the border. They used to supply heroin to jail warden Gurmej Singh to supply contraband to those involved in the drug peddling and lodged inside high security jail complex,” he said.

Police said both the accused were arrested from a house in Guru Hargobindpura, Chheharta, Amritsar. Later, Gurmej was also nabbed from Fatehpur area. A case was registered against them under the NDPS Act.
