A criminal suffered bullet injury during the exchange of fire on Jassian road in Haibowal on Thursday night. Police officials, however, had a miraculous escape.

The suspect was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment. He was identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of the Tibba Road area. Two cases of robbery are already registered against him.

ADCP (Crime) Amandeep Brar, who reached the scene, said on Thursday night around 11.30 pm, ASI Harjaap Singh of CIA-1 along with a police team had laid a naka on the Jassian road to keep a check over criminal elements. On suspicion, a person riding a Honda Activa scooter was signalled to stop for checking. Before the police could ask anything to the man, he opened fire at the police team. After which cross fires were exchanged. The miscreant was shot on his leg. A total of three shots were fired, of which two shots were fired by the suspect at the police while one was fired by the police team.

When the bullet hit the suspect’s leg, he lost control over his scooter and fell on the road. He fired two shots after which, the police caught him. After receiving the bullet injury, the miscreant started screaming. The suspect was given first aid and sent to a hospital for treatment. The forensic team also reached the scene and collected empty bullet shells and cartridges for investigation, the ADCP said.

Brar said the police also recovered an illegal .32 bore pistol from the scene. The criminal will be questioned as from where he brought the illegal weapon and if he had used the same while committing other crimes. Police officials said two cases were registered against the man and now, his police remand would be obtained to bust the entire gang. The role of the suspect in past robberies and loot incidents will also be checked.
