Crackdown on drunken driving, 47 challaned

The Commissionerate Police conducted a special night drive to curb drunken driving and public liquor consumption, issuing 47 challans across the city. The operation, conducted in the last two days, aimed to enhance public safety and maintain law and order near wine shops and other establishments.

The drive was supervised by ACP Central and ACP Model Town and took place from 8pm to 11pm in areas under Police Station Division Number 4 and Division Number 7.

The special drive saw the participation of SHOs from both police stations, supported by the Traffic/ERS and Field Media Team (FMT). A total of 185 vehicles were checked during the operation with breath analyzers to detect alcohol consumption among suspected drivers.

The police emphasised that the drive was designed not only to deter drunken driving but also to prevent the illegal sale and consumption of liquor inside vehicles, which poses a significant threat to public safety.

The operation resulted in the issuance of 47 challans for various violations. Of these, 11 were for drinking and driving, a serious offence that remains a major focus of the police. Other violations included 12 challans for not wearing helmets, eight for two-wheelers without proper number plates and seven for triple riding. Additionally, three challans were issued for vehicles with black window films and six vehicles were impounded due to a lack of proper documentation.

The Commissionerate Police Jalandhar stated that this special drive was part of their ongoing efforts to promote road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. The department emphasised its commitment to creating a safer environment for citizens and deterring illegal activities near liquor outlets. “Such operations will continue to be a priority for the police in order to maintain public safety and order”, said a police official.
