A couple from Kandila village drowned in the sarovar of a gurdwara at nearby Leel Kalan village here.

Leel Kalan sarpanch Gurnam Singh said he was informed by a gurdwara employee around 5.30 am that two bodies were floating in the sarovar. He immediately informed the police. Police sources said the deceased were identified as Balwant Singh (48) and his wife Rajwant Kaur (44).

“Balwant slipped into the sarovar while taking a bath. His wife tried to rescue him, but she also drowned. They used to come to the gurdwara every day to pay obeisance and also used to take bath in the sarovar. The village sarpanch alerted us and we took out the bodies. They were taken to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared them ‘brought dead’,” said a police official. The couple is survived by two sons and a daughter.
