Sounding the poll bugle in Maharashtra on a day when Rahul Gandhi was also in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Congress was being run by a coterie of urban Naxals and was the most corrupt party.

Modi was addressing rallies in Maharashtra’s Washim and Thane. On the occasion, he dedicated to the nation projects worth over Rs 50,000 crore, including Thane Ring Metro and Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension.

Thane, the home turf of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, alone saw the PM lay the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 32,800 crore. The PM touched upon the conferment of the classical language status on Marathi and said the move showed not just respect towards Maharashtra and the Marathi language but was also an ode to the tradition which gave India a rich culture of knowledge, philosophy, spirituality and literature.

Earlier today in Washim, the PM disbursed Kisan Samman Nidhi to 9.5 crore farmers of the country and initiated several development projects.

He said new milestones were being achieved in Thane towards modern development of Maharashtra and highlighted that today’s occasion was a glimpse of the state’s bright future. Modi attacked the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government, saying that its track record was proof that the government was anti-development.

The PM cited examples of protests against Atal Setu, conspiracy to shut down the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train and stalling of water-related projects in drought areas of the state to flay past governments. The PM said, “The Congress only knows how to loot the poor and keep them poor for its vested political interests. It only knows how to divide. We have to stay alert and united. The Congress is run by a gang of urban Naxals.”

The PM also flagged the recent Rs 5,600-crore drug haul in Delhi, saying that “everyone can see how closely the Congress stands with those who do not harbour good intentions for India...Drugs worth thousands of crores were seized in Delhi recently and a Congress leader is suspected to be the kingpin. Congress wants to contest elections from the money it gets by pushing the youth towards drugs,” the PM said.

A former Delhi Youth Congress functionary, Tushar Goyal, has been arrested by the Delhi Police special cell in the case and has been called the prime receiver and distributor of the seized drugs. The Election Commission is soon expected to announce the poll schedule for Maharashtra.
