Pandemic claims 9 more lives in Ludhiana

Today, nine more persons succumbed to Covid-19 while 171 more tested positive. The death toll has gone up to 312 and the number of positive cases to 8,679 in the district. As many as 26 patients are on ventilator at present.
The deceased include three women. Two victims, an 80-year-old man from Ambedkar Nagar (Civil Hospital) and another of the same age from Muradpura (Deepak Hospital), were also suffering from diabetes.
A 75-year-old woman from Mundian Kalan and a 51-year-old resident of SKS Nagar died at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. The later was a cancer patient.
A 56-year-old resident of the Police Lines and a 57-year-old man from Raikot breathed their last at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Both had co-morbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
A 68-year-old man from Jamalpur Colony admitted at Deepak Hospital and a 67-year-old man from Chandigarh Road admitted at GTB Hospital lost their battle to the virus today. A 62-year-old woman from Maharana Pratap Singh Nagar, who died at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, was also suffering from a heart ailment.
A maximum number of 63 positive cases were reported from flu corners. Fortytwo cases surfaced during contact tracing. The other cases include 29 healthcare workers, a pregnant woman, four pre-operative cases and one severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) case.
Today, 465 people were placed under home quarantine. The number of patients who have recovered from the illness has reached 6,292.
4,344 samples collected in a single day
As part of its initiative to control the spread of Covid-19, the Health Department today collected a maximum of 4,344 samples in a single day in the district.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Sharma said efforts were being made by all doctors, community health officers and other para medical staff of the Health Department under the supervision of the SDMs to control the spread of disease. As many as 4,344 samples were collected today, which was a record. He commended all SDMs and the Health Department for this new record.
Recovery rate 72.5%
He said of a total of 8,679 patients, 72.5% (6,292 patients) had fully recovered while many others were undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals. He appealed to the residents not to panic as Covid was a completely curable disease. “People should get themselves tested for Covid immediately whenever they feel they have Covid-like symptoms,” he said.
Sharma said the time between the detection and examination of the symptoms is important, but when people do not get themselves tested despite symptoms, sometimes their health deteriorates, which leads to unfortunate incidents.
