COVID-19 pandemic: Cases breach 3,000 mark

Today, 142 persons, including 26 policemen, tested positive for Covid-19 in the district while two persons lost their lives to the virus. A new micro-containment was declared in Jeevan Nagar in the city.
The Covid cases in the district have breached the 3,000 mark. In the past seven days, Ludhiana district has seen 770 positive cases and 30 deaths. So far, nearly 80 policemen have been infected and more than 30 have recovered, and joined back duty.
Those who succumbed today were a 35-year-old resident of Bhattian, who was admitted to Deep Hospital, and a 64-year-old man from Dhuri Lines, who was admitted to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.
New micro-containment zone at Jeevan Nagar
eanwhile, street number 17 and 18 of Jeevan Nagar, Chandigarh Road, were declared a micro-containment zone after nine cases emerged there. This is the seventh micro-containment zone.
A total of 61,304 samples have been taken to date, of which 1,800 reports are pending. While the number of infections has reached up to 3,028, that of fatalities is 82 in the district.
At present, 3,987 persons are under home quarantine. Today, 253 persons were asked to home-quarantine themselves.
The 26 policemen testing positive today include two head constables from Sidhwan Bet and Haibowal, two constables from the Civil Lines and Basti Jodhewal, three ASIs from Ghumar Mandi, Police Colony and Lalheri Road in Khanna, a constable from Harnampura village, two ASIs from Haibowal, a senior constable from Jamalpur, an ASI from Hathi Complex, an ASI and an SI from Sunder Nagar, an ASI from Panchsheel Enclave, three staffers of Police Control Room, an ASI from Division Number 5, an ASI from Meharban Road, a constable from the control room, two cops from Division Number 6, an ASI from the Police Lines of Jamalpur, two constables from Sadar Thana and Dugri.
Eight more healthcare workers have contracted infection. They are from Harpal Nagar, Dugri, Giaspura, Hargobind Nagar, Miller Ganj, Habib Road, Haibowal Kalan and Ghudani Khurd.
The rest of the cases, mostly contacts of Covid patients, belong to Benjamin Road, Janta Nagar, Model Gram, Barewal Awana, Upkar Nagar, Haibowal Kalan, Chandar Nagar, Rajguru Nagar, Basant Avenue, Sarabha Nagar, Brindaban Road, Maharaj Nagar, Dandi Swami Road, College Road, Kakowal Road, Aggar Nagar, Sector 39A, Miller Ganj, Rishi Nagar, Durgapuri, Angad Dev Colony, Passi Nagar, Centra Greens on Pakhowal Road, Radha Swami Road, New Kartar Nagar, Sandhu Nagar, Karnail Singh Nagar and Giaspura.
Deceased’s kin write to rights commission
The family of Covid victim Sanjeev Nagpal, who died after he failed to get a bed in city hospitals, has written to the State Human Rights Commission. He tested for Covid at a private hospital and till his report came, he was kept in the flu corner there. When the report came positive, he was asked to shift to another hospital as there was no bed available. The family tried at various hospitals in vain and finally, took him to Civil Hospital where he died. Kimti Rawal, brother-in-law of Sanjeev, said they were ready to spend money but could not get a bed for their family member. The Ludhiana Civil Surgeon had issued a show-cause notice to the hospital in this regard.
