The Himachal Pradesh Police paid tribute to the fallen police personnel during the state-level Police Commemoration Day at the Bharari Police Lines. Additional Director-General of Police (Law & Order) Abhishek Trivedi honoured martyrs by recalling the names of officers across the country who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year.

Senior officers, including Deputy Inspector Generals Ranjana Chauhan, Gurudev Sharma and Rahul Nath, along with retired officers, attended the event and laid floral wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial. Police personnel from all ranks paid homage by offering floral tributes to the fallen heroes. Similar commemorative events were held at district and battalion headquarters statewide.

ADGP Trivedi highlighted the diverse and complex challenges faced by the police force, including combating terrorism, insurgency, Naxalite attacks, communal riots, encroachment, looting and suppressing forest and mining mafias. He also emphasised their role in maintaining law and order, managing violent mobs, safeguarding lives and property, responding to natural disasters and rescuing the injured during emergencies. Police personnel, he noted, often encounter extreme situations and sometimes sacrifice their lives in the line of duty.

The significance of October 21 in Indian history stems from a tragic event in 1959 when 21 Indian police personnel, led by CRPF Sub-Inspector Karam Singh, were ambushed by the Chinese army at Hot Springs, Ladakh. Ten officers were martyred in this fierce encounter, while 11 were captured.

In recognition of their sacrifice, Police Commemoration Day is observed annually. Officially recognised in 1960, the day has been marked by a National Police Commemoration Day Parade in Delhi since 2012.
