In an effort to combat drug-related crimes, five courts in Karnal have achieved an impressive 87 per cent conviction rate in cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in six months. Out of the 132 cases decided, 180 people have been convicted in 115 cases.

The successful conviction rate is attributed to the timely submission of challans with sufficient evidence by the police, and effective arguments by public prosecutors.

The data collected by The Tribune reveals that the court of Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sushil Kumar Garg decided 46 cases with a 100 per cent conviction rate. Similarly, the court of ASJ Rajnish Kumar Sharma concluded 21 cases, resulting in 15 convictions and six acquittals. ASJ Anil Kumar’s court decided 29 cases, securing 27 convictions and two acquittals. The court of ASJ Mohit Aggarwal decided 22 cases, with 17 convictions and five acquittals, while the court of ASJ Rajneesh Kumar decided 14 cases, with 10 convictions and four acquittals.

District attorney Pankaj Saini emphasised the importance of this high conviction rate in the broader fight against drug abuse. He said that the cases involving commercial quantities of drugs, categorised as ‘chinhit apradh’ (identified crimes), were prioritised.
