Congress leader Capt Harminder Singh joins SAD
Chandigarh, October 5
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today replaced its Sultanpur Lodhi candidate Upinderjit Kaur with ex-Congress leader and former Milkfed chairman Capt Harminder Singh, who joined the Akalis today in the presence of its president Sukhbir Singh Badal here.
Capt Harminder Singh’s son Karanvir was an OSD with ex-CM Capt Amarinder Singh. Karanvir was not present at the joining ceremony.
Capt Harminder Singh joined the SAD along with a large number of Congressmen. While welcoming him into the party fold, the SAD president announced he would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections from the Sultanpur Lodhi Assembly constituency.
Sukhbir said Capt Harminder Singh had emerged as the consensus candidate of the SAD with the entire rank and file of the party reposing faith in him. He also praised the work done by former Finance Minister Upinderjit Kaur, who has been representing the party in Sultanpur Lodhi. He said the veteran leader had informed him she would not be able to contest election due to old age.
Capt Harminder said, “It is an honour to contest the elections from the ‘nagri’ of Guru Nanak and I am confident I will win the forthcoming elections with a record margin.” He also said he had resigned from the Congress due to open division in the party and the fact that the ordinary person was suffering due to intense wrangling for the top post in the Punjab Congress. — TNS
