Former Union Minister and BJP MP from Hamirpur, Anurag Thakur attacked the Congress, alleging the state had been brought to the verge of bankruptcy due to mismanagement.

While addressing a press conference here today, Thakur said, “The state government has taken around Rs 30,000 crore in loans over the last one-and-a-half years. This is about fifty per cent of what all previous governments took over 60 years. Besides, the state has imposed unreasonably high taxes on the residents. Since coming to power, the government has hiked fuel, water and PDS shops commodities' prices, and imposed cess on power. Despite that, the state has not been able to pay salaries and pensions to its employees on time”.

He said the CM had been alleging the Centre was not providing adequate grants. “Now, the facts have come out that Rs 140 crore given in aid by the Centre for disaster management had not been utilised properly. Besides, the Centre gave a record 12,000 houses to the poor under the PM Awas Yojna,” he added.

Thakur said while the poor were being deprived of small financial benefits, the CM was providing hefty salaries to his friends and spending crores on renovation of offices and houses of ministers in Shimla.

Thakur was here to chair a function to increase party membership. He said the BJP had kept a target of reaching 16 lakh members in the state. “The BJP has emerged as the largest political party in the world under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. In the campaign started just 10 days ago, some four crore new members have joined the party,” he claimed.

While responding to queries from reporters, Thakur blamed the state government for delay in construction of the North Campus of Central University Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) in the Dharamsala Assembly constituency. He said the state government was not depositing money for transfer of land in the name of the university. The Centre had already sanctioned Rs 500 crore for the CUHP of which, an amount of Rs 250 crore was to be spent in the Dharamsala area, he added.
