Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said that the Congress had made Haryana a hub of education by establishing national and international-level institutions but the BJP ruined the education system.

Hooda, while talking to a delegation of teachers at his residence in New Delhi today, said that the Congress had established every big educational institution of the country in Haryana while in the past 10 years, the BJP could not build even one big institution.

He said, “During the BJP rule, for the first time in the history of the state, small children had to sit on a dharna and fast outside their schools in support of their demand for teachers.” The delegation told Hooda about the problems being faced in schools, colleges and universities and urged him that their issues be resolved earnestly if the Congress forms government. Hooda said that the Congress wanted to make Haryana the number one state in the country in the field of education and a hub of world-class institutions. “Our government in its second tenure made strong progress in the education sector. For this, the IIT-Delhi’s extension campus, IIM, Central Institute of Petrochemical Engineering and Technology (CIPET), National Institute of Design (NID), Kurukshetra, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Panchkula, were set up in Haryana,” he added.

“During the Congress rule, Haryana became the first state to have 20 national and international-level institutions, benefiting students and improving the standard of education. But during the BJP’s 10-year rule, no such institution was built in the state. The BJP even failed to provide adequate staff in schools, colleges and universities,” he alleged.

Hooda said, “The Congress government had established a Central University at Mahendragarh, 154 polytechnic colleges, 56 ITIs, DIETs in various districts, four government engineering colleges, 2,623 schools, Sainik School in Rewari and six Kendriya Vidyalayas. Besides, institutions like Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonepat, National Law University, six medical colleges, Women’s Medical College at Gohana are also the achievements of the Congress,” he added.

About higher education, the former Chief Minister said that 4,618 out of 7,986 sanctioned posts of professor in 182 government colleges were lying vacant in the absence of the recruitment of teachers.

“In the name of merger, the BJP-JJP government closed 5,000 schools in the state and sacked PTIs and drawing teachers. The BJP-JJP government also closed DIETs and Dr Ambedkar Scholarship Scheme started by the Congress. Due to this, the assistance amount given to 20 lakh poor, SC and OBC children was stopped,” he added.

He said that on the pretext of the New Education Policy, the BJP government significantly increased fees in universities.
