Comply with green norms in 2 weeks or face action, Chandigarh Golf Club told
Chandigarh, January 31
The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has issued a final showcause notice to Chandigarh Golf Club, citing environmental violations. This follows two earlier notices served on October 16, 2023, and January 8, 2024.
According to the notice, issued by TC Nautiyal, Member Secretary, CPCC, the club has been running a restaurant and a diesel generator set without consent. Other violations included construction of two buildings without consent, discharge of wastewater into municipal drains without treatment and using a diesel generator set that exceeded its 15-year lifespan.
The CPCC gave two weeks’ time to the club to address environmental concerns to avoid potential action, which include the closure of the unit, disconnection of electricity and water supply, immediate sealing of the unit, and imposition of environmental compensation, as directed by the NGT.
As per the notice, under the Air Act and Water Act, whoever fails to comply with any orders or any directions issued by a court or any direction shall, in respect of each failure and on conviction, be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than one year and six months, but may be extended to six years and with fine.
“Whereas whoever contravenes the provisions of said rules be punishable with imprisonment for a term, which may extend to five years or with fine which may extend to Rs 1 lakh or with both and in case the failure or contravention continues, with additional fine which may extend to Rs 5,000 for every day during which such failure or contravention continues after the conviction for the first such failure or contravention,” it read.
