Communal forces behind discord in Himachal: Social organisations
In the wake of rising communal tensions in Himachal Pradesh, several grassroots organisations held a conference in Mandi to promote harmony in society.
The event saw participation from the Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU), Himachal Kisan Sabha, Democratic Women’s Committee and several youth outfits.
Bhupender Singh of the CITU highlighted targeting of a specific community under the guise of opposing illegal construction in Shimla. Despite the matter being sub judice, communal forces had allegedly launched a coordinated effort to sow discord and undermine communal harmony, he said.
He said the same groups were now targeting migrant workers who come to Himachal Pradesh for employment, espcialy those involved in small businesses and vendors.
He pointed out that migrants were being harassed and their rights to operate were being challenged on religious affiliations.
He said the CITU stands firmly against this discrimination and aims to launch awareness campaign to uphold the rights of all citizens.
He said the state government’s response to the situation, particularly the implementation of the Street Vendors Act, had been inadequate and delayed, with the previous government failing to form the necessary committees during its tenure.
Kushal Bhardwaj of the Kisan Sabha added that communal tensions were being fueled by so-called Hindu organisations and individuals with criminal backgrounds who seek to distract the public from pressing issues such as inflation and unemployment.
Suresh Sarwal raised concerns that the focus on communal strife may sideline critical issues related to employment.
Praveen Kumar of the Street Vendors’ Union called for collective action against divisive forces.
The conference concluded with a commitment from all attendees to unite against communalism and work towards preserving social harmony in the region.
