A four-year-old girl had a narrow escape after a short circuit in her locked room led to a fire at a Purab Premium Apartments flat in Sector 88.

The girl, Diksha, was trapped in the room as her parents had locked it from outside after leaving for work. A short circuit in the afternoon led to the fire, which soon spread across the mattress and clothes lying in the room.

The room, which also had an LPG cylinder, filled up with smoke but a major tragedy was averted after security guards Ketan and Vishal broke in through the windows to rescue the girl. The neighbours assisted in dousing the flames.

The neighbours said Diksha’s parents, Suresh and Manju, work as caretakers for the flat owner. They had left the child unattended as they stepped out to run an errand.

A resident, Dalwinder Singh, said, “Both Ketan and Vishal rose above their duty to save the child. The whole society is appreciating their brave act. The incident teaches us a lesson that whatever the compulsions of working couples they must not leave kids unattended.”

Authorities, meanwhile, are probing whether an electricity meter can be installed inside the room or not.
