Civic body all set to install 6K street lights in wards of city
Every street of the city is soon expected to be lit at night as the Municipal Corporation (MC) is all set to install 6,000 street lights in different wards of the city. The tendering process for the same has been initiated by the civic body.
Before the beginning of the process for the MC elections, local MLAs want maximum developmental works to be initiated in the city. The reason behind the same is to catch the attention of voters. Now, with the MC installing street lights, the MLAs are trying their best to get these installed in their respective constituencies.
This month, within a period of one week, over 100 street lights have been stolen from various parts of the city and the MC will be reinstalling these too while many new colonies sans street lights and in some, street lights are lying defunct. Now, all complaints of city residents related to street lights will be resolved soon and new lights will soon lit up roads at night.
In the absence of street lights, many incidents of theft and accidents have also been reported in the recent past.
Manjitinder Singh, XEN (lights), said a survey was being conducted in the city so that the MC comes to know about the requirement of street lights and areas where these were required. The work would be carried according to the requirement of specific areas and priority would be given to those areas where no street lights had been installed.
Most of lights on the Southern Bypass remain non-functional, posing a risk for commuters.
“Street lights are not functional due to which it becomes difficult to commute during night when I return home from work. Street lights should be repaired at the earliest as it will also help check any anti-social activity in the area,” said a businessman from the Focal Point area.
