Chandigarh boys lost to Bengal by three runs in a thrilling pre-quarterfinal of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament held in Bengaluru recently. Experienced national cap Mohammed Shammi overshadowed the all-round performances of Raj Angad Bawa and Jagjit Sandhu as Chandigarh was restricted to 156/9 against the modest challenge of 159/9.

Earlier, Chandigarh won the toss and decided to field first. The Chandigarh bowlers were right on target as Bengal’s top order of Abhishek Porel (8), Skipper Sudip Kumar (0) and Habib Gandhi (10) was back in the pavilion at 21. Thereafter, Karan Lal and Bijoy Chatterjee compensated the loss with a 40-run partnership. Bawa took Chatterjee’s wicket to reduce the side to 61/4. Later, Amrit Lubana dismissed Shahbaz (7) in the very next over and sent back half the side at 70. Later, Bawa in the same spell bowled out dangerous looking top scorer Karan Lal (33). Later, Nikhil Sharma took wickets of Agniv Pan (6) and Kanishq (1), making it 114/8 for Bengal.

Then Shammi took charge along with Pradipta Pramanik and raised a 24-run partnership. Bhagminder dismissed Pramanik (30) while Shammi remained unbeaten at 32 to help the side reach 159/9.

In reply, opener Arsalan Khan (0) was back to the pavilion after getting caught by Habib Gandhi off Shammi. Shivam Bhambri (14) became Sanyam Ghosh’s first victim, as Chandigarh struggled at 20/2. Ghosh then took Lubana (14) and skipper Manan Vohra (23) also followed the suit after falling prey to Shahbaz with the team’s total at 56/4. Thereafter, Pradeep Yadav and Bawa raised a 45-run partnership to take the total to 101. Kanishk took Pradeep’s (27) wicket. Bawa, who was playing at 32 was caught by Ghosh off his own bowling as Bengal left the opposition at 129/6. Kanishk had Lather (6) as city lads struggled at 136/7. However, Sandhu raised some hopes by scoring 12 runs off Shammi in the 19th over, but he was run out by Abhishek Porel. Nikhil Sharma (22) became the fourth victim of Ghosh. The last ball boundary from Nishunk Birla couldn’t help the team as Chandigarh was restricted at 156/9.

Chandigarh register 1-wkt win over Odisha

Chandigarh boys ended their Cooch Behar Trophy campaign by registering a one-wicket win over hosts Odisha in the last league match. On the last day of the match, Chandigarh needed 105 runs with nine wickets in hand, but Priyanshu Mohanty (7/74) put the visitors in trouble. In reply to Odisha’s first innings score of 257, Chandigarh was all out for 215. Later, Odisha was all out for 132 in the second innings to post a 174-run target to win. On the last day, Chandigarh struggled at 118/7 but Markandey Panchal (59) steered Chandigarh to a one wicket win.

Rajasthan beat UT girls by 11 runs

UT girls faced an 11-run defeat against Rajasthan in their fourth league match of the Seniors One Day Tournament. Chasing 119, Chandigarh eves were all out at 107. AP Maheshwari (23) was the highest scorer for Rajasthan. In reply, Chandigarh quickly lost eight wickets andwere bundled out in the 47th over. Aaradhana Bisht (21) remained the top scorer.

Chandigarh defeat Saurashtra

The local team beat Saurashtra by an innings and 57 runs in the ongoing Vijay Merchant Trophy match being played in Shimoga (Karnataka). Saurashtra won the toss and put Chandigarh to bat first. Chandigarh scored 434 with the help of Anurag (152). Parth (67) and Arjun Veer (54) scored half centuries. Saurashtra was bowled out for 254. Karma Babaria (82) and Rudra Lakhana (50) smashed half centuries. In the second innings, Akul (4/12) and Ranveer (3/29) bundled out Saurashtra for 123 runs and won the match by an innings margin.
