Choked drain pipes cause waterlogging on Amritsar roads

Rainwater drain pipes installed on elevated roads and rainwater chambers on the city roads are lying choked. The choking of drain water and chambers is leading to water accumulation on roads. On the elevated road, the entry points of drain pipes are filled with mud, besides being blocked by a growth of grass and plants. Owing to the choking of drain pipes and chambers, water can be seen accumulated on roads.

On the Mall Road, waterlogging near rainwater chambers is common. On Monday morning, moderate rain led to waterlogging on city roads. Residents asked the Amritsar Municipal Corporation to clear the path of drain pipes and rainwater chambers.

Manmohan Singh, a resident, said due to the waterlogging on the elevated road, commuters going under the bridge witnessed a leakage from the bridge. Muddy water spoiled clothes of commuters riding on two wheelers.

“The reason for non-cleaning of choked drains, drainage pipes and chambers is that there are no maintenance teams with the MC, which used to exist about 30 years ago. The team of maintenance workers include four to six Beldars are tasked to attend such issues on a road as long as 6-10 km. After the retirement of these workers, no fresh recruitment has been done by the government on the ruse that this is a wasteful expenditure,” said Amritpal Singh, another resident.
