Chargesheet filed against former Punjab AIG
The police have filed a charge sheet against a former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police, Malvinder Singh Sidhu, under murder charges. Sidhu was arrested after he allegedly shot dead his son-in-law, Harpreet Singh, an Indian Revenue Service officer, at the District Courts complex here on August 3.
The victim was present in the court for a hearing related to his ongoing divorce case when the accused allegedly killed him. The police have filed the chargesheet for the offences punishable under 103 (2), 61 and 103 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Indian Arms Act 1959.
Harpreet, who worked with a ministry in Delhi, had been facing a divorce case with the daughter of the accused. People from both sides were attending a session at the Mediation Centre.
The police claimed that during the proceedings, Sidhu requested to use the bathroom and asked Harpreet to guide him to the restroom. When both went out of the centre, Sidhu allegedly shot his son-in-law twice. The advocates present at the spot rushed the injured to the hospital, where he died.
Lawyers present at the scene nabbed the accused and locked him in a room before informing the police. The police reached the spot and took Sidhu into custody. They recovered a .32 bore pistol along with spent and live bullets from him. The accused has been in judicial custody since the incident. The court has adjourned hearing till November 11 for the framing of charges against the accused.
