Woman’s bail plea dismissed in cheating case
A local court has dismissed a bail application of Kanwaljit Kaur, a resident of Gurdaspur district, Punjab, who allegedly cheated a city jeweller of over Rs 11.8 lakh.
The police registered the FIR against the accused under Sections 406, 420 of IPC on the complaint of Deepinder Singh, owner of the jewellery shop in Sector 19.
The jeweller told the police that on March 12, 2024, the accused came to his shop and sought to borrow money by pledging her jewellery. She pledged 143.870 gm of jewellery and the jeweller gave her Rs 5,80,000 for the same as she was his regular customer.
He said on March 13, 2024, she again pledged gold jewellery weighing 126.770 gm for three months and he gave Rs 5 lakh to her. Again on March 14, she pledged 28.810 gm jewellery and took cash of Rs 1 lakh from the jeweller in the presence of one person.
The complainant said on May 1 police officials, along with the accused, came to his shop and told him that the gold jewellery pledged with him was fraudulently obtained by the accused from some other jeweller in Sector 17, Chandigarh.
On this, the complainant asked the accused to return his money to which she flatly refused. The police arrested the accused on the basis of the complaint.
Counsel for the accused claimed that she has been falsely implicated in the case and no offence was committed by her. On the other hand, Pankaj Chandgothia, counsel for complainant Deepinder Singh and public prosecutor said that accused was a habitual offender and 8 FIRs already registered against her.
After hearing of the arguments, the court dismissed her bail application.
