UGC member Prof Mohanty dwells on importance of cultural diplomacy
Prof Sachidananda Mohanty, a scholar, academician and member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), delivered a lecture on “Indo-US Cultural Diplomacy and Educational Exchange (1950-1996)” at the Biotech Conference Hall, PGGC-11, Chandigarh.
The event that was organised by the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies drew a considerable participation and interest from students and faculty alike.
In his address, Prof Mohanty explored the critical role of student exchange programmes in fostering mutual understanding and contributing to nation-building efforts between India and the United States. He highlighted the significance of cultural diplomacy, particularly during the Cold War, linking historical educational exchanges to the evolving geopolitical and geo-strategic landscape of today. Prof Mohanty emphasised the enduring power of soft diplomacy in shaping international relations, noting its relevance in addressing contemporary regional conflicts and global diplomacy.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar, convener of the event, reflected on the lecture’s importance, stating, “With the ongoing conflicts like the Israel-Palestine war and the Russia-Ukraine war, the global peace and stability are at risk. The students who attended this lecture now understand the critical role of dialogue and diplomacy in creating a conducive environment for peace. Cultural diplomacy, which has shaped nation-building and sustainable development in the past, holds the same potential today.” The event saw the presence of prominent faculty members, including Principal Prof Rama Arora; Dean Deepshika, Dr Gurinder, Head of the English Department, Prof Benudhar Patra, and Dr Suresh Kumar, Head of the Psychology Department. Prof Jayanti Dutta, Director, MMTTC, Panjab University, was the guest of honour.
They praised Prof Mohanty’s scholarship and his insightful engagement with the students. Prof Mohanty also commended the college’s commitment to innovative and multidisciplinary education under the New Education Policy (NEP), particularly its introduction of courses in defence journalism and international relations for the academic session 2024-2025.
