Chandigarh, February 7

A local court has sentenced two persons, Suresh, alias Yara, and Rajnish Kalia, alias Raji, to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each in a two-year-old snatching case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the convicts.

The police had registered a case against the accused for the offences punishable under Sections 379-A, 34 and 411 of the IPC on May 1, 2022, following a complaint of a girl student. She stated that she was a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Chandigarh, and a student of class 12.

She said she was returning home on her bicycle when on the road between Sectors 38 and 40-D, a scooter came from behind. One of the two riders, who were without helmets, said “excuse me”, and the pillion rider snatched her mobile phone. During the investigation, the accused were arrested.

After hearing the arguments, the court held the duo guilty and pronounced the quantum of sentence.
