Students protest delay in Panjab University Senate election
Students assembled at the Student Centre on the Panjab University campus and protested against the delay in elections to the Senate, the governing body of the university.
The protest was held under the banner of ‘Panjab University Bachao Morcha’. Later, the protesters carried out a march at the Student Centre.
Student leaders, with many from SATH, a PU students’ organisation, have been protesting over the issue for the past five days.
“This should be a matter of grave concern for all of us. The refusal to conduct elections to the Senate, the tenure of which is ending on October 31, is part of a larger conspiracy by the university’s administration and the Central Government,” said a student leader.
It is important to note that the tenure of the Senate constituted in 2021 is about to end and the university has not notified any election to the governing body.
Five senators have also approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which has asked the university to file its reply on the matter by October 28, the next date of hearing.
