Students discuss Yemen conflict, digital rights

The much-awaited The Tribune Model United Nations (MUN) 2024 got underway at The Tribune School today. The event sponsored by Chitkara University and powered by Grid Advertising, Sector 34, offered a unique platform for the young minds to showcase their talent.

“The prestigious conference is not just a simulation, it’s a thrilling opportunity to hone your public speaking, negotiation and critical thinking skills,” said Justice Aman Chaudhary of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who inaugurated the event amid fanfare.

Addressing the participating students, Justice Chaudhary advised them to be the leaders of future and torch-bearers of the nation.

Principal Rani Poddar welcomed the chief guest and wished the participants a better future. Dr Madhu Chitkara, Pro Chancellor, Chitkara University, in her message to the students guided them to world towards innovation and help India become a ‘world leader’.

On the opening day, competitive sessions of all committees were held. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) discussed agenda, including addressing the ongoing conflict in Yemen and its humanitarian impact in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, besides addressing the question of equitable representation and increase in the membership of the Security Council.

The Human Rights Council (HRC) held discussions on protecting the freedom of speech and expression by addressing issues related to media censorship and digital rights, while the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held deliberation on the dispute in the South China Sea and its implications.

As many as 200 students from leading region’s schools, including hosts The Tribune School, Mount Carmel School, Sector 47; Yadavindra Public School, Patiala; Mind Tree School, Kharar; Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36; St Stephen’s School, Sector 45; Hansraj Public School, Panchkula; Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27; Ankur School, Sector 14; Chitkara International School, Sector 25, and others participated on the opening day of the two-day event.

The discussions will continue on the second day. The winners of the MUN will be awarded by Justice Arunvir Vashishta.
