SAD leader flays govt over inadequate arrangements for paddy purchase

Shiromani Akali Dal reform movement leader and former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra has accused the Punjab Government of failing to make adequate arrangements for the procurement of the newly arrived paddy crop in local markets.

According to him, the government’s negligence has created unrest among sheller owners, who are frustrated by the non-procurement of nearly 5 lakh MT of rice.

“The state government appears indifferent to the issue, with neither the Chief Minister nor any minister making efforts to engage with Delhi for a resolution,” he said.

Chandumajra emphasised that the Punjab government’s inaction was fuelling tensions between farmers and sheller owners, leading to strained relations within the agricultural community. In a letter written to the Chief Minister, Chandumajra urged him to ensure the immediate intervention of the government to address the plight of farmers waiting for procurement in the markets.

He also appealed to the Governor of Punjab to take the initiative and mediate between the Centre and the state government to bring relief to the affected farmers.

Furthermore, Chandumajra questioned the conduct of panchayat elections during the festival and paddy season, suggesting it was a deliberate move to divert attention from widespread election rigging.
