Carnival: Disabled to perform
Chandigarh: The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities chaired a meeting on Tuesday to give final shape to various activities and awareness programmes by ‘divyangjans’ in the upcoming three-day Chandigarh Carnival (October 25-27) being organised by Chandigarh Tourism Department. For the first time, the carnival will bring together persons with disabilities, their families, caregivers, civil society organisations, policymakers and the people of Chandigarh. TNS
Kids’ exposure to drugs ‘scary’
Chandigarh: Surveys by the Centre and the PGI show that the age of initiation into substance abuse is dropping significantly. One among every five children between the ages of 10 to 17 is at risk of developing a substance-use disorder. This alarming trend is seen in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, where children as young as 9 to 12 years are exposed to drugs. This was highlighted by author Aditya Kant in an interactive session at Strawberry High School, Chandigarh, on Tuesday while citing a report of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. TNS
Veterans’ outreach event
Chandigarh: A veterans’ outreach programme to update former defence personnel on the Army’s initiatives for their welfare and provide a one-stop solution for their issues was organised by the Western Command at Chandimandir Military Station on Tuesday, bringing together over 500 retired officers from the tricity. Lt-Genl Manoj Kumar Katiyar, GOC Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, interacted with the veterans. Suggestion box initiative
Chandigarh: In a progressive step towards encouraging players, parents, coaches, staff and other stakeholders to share and express their thoughts on the sports ecosystem, submit ideas and feedback, the UT Administration will implement a suggestion box initiative at all sports complexes in the city by October 31. The suggestion boxes in sports complexes will be prominently displayed at accessible locations, ensuring anonymity for users. TNS
