Mayor Kuldeep Kumar today inaugurated a Sensory Park in Sector 22 here in the presence of Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar, area councillor Damanpreet Singh and prominent persons of the city.

Addressing those present on the occasion, the Mayor said he idea of Sensory Park focused on engaging and enhancing multiple senses and abilities of an individual like sight, taste, smell, touch, hearing, mobility and motor skills and intellectual skill.

He said the park also offered variety of ways of meeting, playing and addressing leisure needs of children with and without disability.

The project titled Sensory Park has been developed in the park near House Nos. 3901 to 3905, Sector 22-D, opposite Gurdwara Sahib, over an area of 0.65 acre at a cost of approximately Rs1.24 crore.

The Mayor said the play area had rubber flooring, which enhanced the safety of children.

For visually impaired individuals, tactile cement concrete tactile pavers have been used, which serve as directional indictors. Play equipment such as shoulder builder, spring rider, see-saw, merry-go-around, swing, leg roller and wheelchair-accessible basketball court — all help children work on their big and small muscles, orienting their body in shape and sense of body balance. Various musical equipment such as congo track, drum track, musical panel and polls had also been installed, said the Mayor.

He said interactive railings with steps at various level had been installed in the park. A hedge maze having labyrinth of pathways with flooring as a reflexology path is the centre of attraction. Various kinds of herbs, shrubs and trees are planted.

He said children are encouraged to touch, smell, taste and generally attract with the environment around them. Different feature walls also exist along the pathway, which help activate children’s observing and learning ability. A wall having surfaces with illusion art, blackboard where they can scribble with chalk and walls having cut-outs of different shapes entice them to explore different aspects.

The Mayor said Sensory Park is a wonderful way for children to explore their senses and learn about the environment around them.
