The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, today organised an exposure visit taking its masters degree course students to Society for Rehabilitation of Mentally Challenged (SOREM) in Sector 36-C.

Prof Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties, scheduled the field visit to SOREM, which is an NGO specialising in early intervention programmes preparing children for inclusive education with special needs.

The Principal and Executive Director of SOREM, Sangeeta Jain, a Trained Autism and Vocational Studies Specialist, urged the students for academic exchanges and awareness projects towards the noble cause of special education.

Sangeeta asked the students to spread awareness about developmental and intellectual disorders like autism, Cerebral Palsy and Down’s Syndrome, which largely go unnoticed in society.

Along with educational and vocational educational modules, the students were also apprised of the NGO’s on-site manufacturing, marketing and sale for multifarious Diwali hampers and products like handmade chocolates, candles, organic masala powders and honey, decorative bags, baskets, which are being showcased at various Diwali exhibits around the city. These are handmade by children enrolled at school with special needs and will be available at Chandigarh Carnival at Leisure Valley in Sector 10 on October 25.
