PGI makes special arrangements for emergency cases on Diwali
In anticipation of the upcoming Diwali festival, the PGIMER Chandigarh has released an advisory aimed at promoting safe celebrations and highlighting crucial preventive measures for injury prevention and related response.
The institute’s Advanced Trauma Centre and Departments of Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery have implemented special arrangements to address emergency cases related to eye injuries and burns, ensuring that prompt and effective care is available throughout the festive season.
Dr SS Pandav, head of the Department of Ophthalmology & Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, emphasised the importance of being prepared for eye injuries. He stated that, “It is vital for everyone to be aware of the emergency contacts available for eye injuries related to the celebrations. From October 30 to November 2, we will have an emergency Diwali roster in place to ensure prompt care for those in need.”
Dr Pandav further added that, “People can reach us on 9814014464 or directly contact the Advanced Eye Centre on 0172-2756117 and 2755454 for immediate assistance. Each case will be managed under the supervision of the on-call consultant, with team leaders available to support emergency cases at the Advanced Eye Centre.”
Dr Atul Parashar, head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, PGIMER, said that the department would provide round-the-clock support for managing burn injuries during the festivities.
Dos and don’ts for a safe Diwali
- Avoid synthetic or loose clothing when handling diyas, candles or firecrackers to reduce the risk of burns.
- Wear shoes to safeguard your feet against injuries.
- Always stand at arm’s length while lighting fireworks to ensure safety.
- Opt for environmentally safe green crackers and adhere to local time restrictions.
- Dispose of used crackers in a bucket of sand or water.
- Never attempt to re-light or pick up a failed firecracker, as this can lead to severe injuries.
- For minor burns, run cool water on the injured part until the burning sensation subsides and avoid applying unapproved substances.
- If clothing catches fire, utilise the ‘stop, drop and roll’ technique, or use a thick blanket to extinguish flames.
- In the event of an eye injury do not rub the eye, instead wash it gently with clean water and seek immediate consultation with an eye specialist.
- Keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby when using candles or fireworks.
