Panjab University slips 2 spots to 25th in NIRF university rankings
Chandigarh, July 15
Within a year of gaining three spots, Panjab University (PU) today slipped two spots to the 25th position in the university category of the National India Rankings (NIRF 2022), released today by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Last year, the university was ranked 23rd in the category. Local authorities blame various factors for this year’s downfall. The ranking is ‘crucial’ as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team is set to visit the university for assessing the grade.
In the overall category, the university gained 1.21 points to enhance its score to 51.23 points, in comparison to last year’s 50.31. Last year, the PU was placed 38th in the overall category, while this year it slipped to the 41st rank.
“The overall picture of PU’s NIRF ranking is not disheartening. The quintessential resilience of academic and research ecosystem of PU, despite the impact of negative factors, did not let it slip down the counter,” claimed Prof Sudhir Kumar, Director, Research and Development Cell, PU.
“Overall the score has improved from 50.31 in 2021 to 51.23 in 2022. However, score in perception has decreased, which may be one of the reasons for change in rank,” said Prof Renu Vig, DUI, PU.
The NIRF ranking of institutes is calculated on the basis of five broad generic groups of parameters — teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception (PR).

The institute has been given 74.01 points in TLR, 78.42 in RPC, 73.34 in GO, 71.98 in OI and 86.94 points in PR.
