A Panjab University assistant professor was arrested for cheating.

The suspect, Moniva Sarkar, who works in Sociology Department, allegedly committed a fraud of Rs 18 lakhs in connection with the sale of a flat in ‘The Lake’ project of Omaxe township in New Chandigarh.

The former Head of the department, around 38 years of age, was arrested from the PU campus on Monday in a case registered under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC at the Mullanpur police station on March 15 this year. She was produced in court today, which remanded her in judicial custody.

Complainant Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Mohali, had stated that he reportedly struck a deal with her for Rs 1.30 crore through his friend Ankush Singla. On September 21 last year, he reportedly paid her Rs 18 lakh and it was decided to get the flat registered in his name on December 5. Later, he came to know that Sarkar, currently a resident of Sector 14, struck a deal to sell the flat to another person and she reportedly has Rs 92 lakh loan against her name.

After a cheating case was registered against her, she reportedly went missing and the case was sent to the Punjab and Haryana High Court for mediation.

Kharar-2 DSP Dharamvir Singh said, “The arrest was made on the orders of the High Court. Her bail application was rejected by the sessions court. The suspect was placed under suspension for past sometime.”
