Officer duped of Rs 9.3 lakh over ‘digital arrest’

Cybercriminals have duped a local resident, who is Director, Skill Development, and posted in Mohali, of Rs 9.30 lakh. The victim, Dinesh Sharma, a resident of Sector 5, MDC, said he received a phone call. The caller claimed to be calling from a post office in Mumbai and said they had received a parcel in his name containing police ID cards, uniform and chemical. The caller dubiously connected the call to a fake cop, who told the victim that he was being arrested digitally.
He said he was kept talking on the phone through the video call for 16 hours. They collected his bank account details and asked him to transfer money to specific bank accounts for the purpose of investigation.
The man said he was duped of Rs 9.30 lakh in the whole process.
