Nigerian woman jailed for smuggling heroin

A court today sentenced a Nigerian woman to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for smuggling heroin in Mohali.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Harjit Kaur Kaleke also imposed a fine of Rs1 lakh on the convict, Joye Cheeka Ozuma Niger. In case of default of payment, the convict will have to further undergo one-year imprisonment.
Following a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF), Mohali, had arrested the Nigerian woman, Joye Cheeka Ozuma, in May 2018 from near the Nature Park in Phase IX here and recovered one-kg heroin from her.
The STF team, under the supervision of Inspector Ram Darshan and ASI Avtar Singh, was present in Phase IV, Mohali. It got a tip-off that a woman was entering Mohali with one-kg heroin. The team immediately laid a trap near the Nature Park in Phase IX here and stopped a Nigerian woman for checking.
On checking, the police recovered one-kg heroin from her possession. She came to India on the business visa in 2015 and used to sell readymade garments in Delhi, Noida and Tripura. In order to earn extra money, she entered into drugs smuggling business. — TNS
