Jailed Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, met the students of the university, protesting against the delay in the elections to the Senate under the banner of ‘Panjab University Bachao Morcha’. Tarsem promised the protesters that he would discuss the matter with his son. Along with elections, the students have also been demanding to quash the FIR registered against 14 of them, including girls, for allegedly trying to disrupt the address of Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann in PU’s Law Auditorium on November 13.

Singh alleged that by delaying elections to the governing body, the Central Government wanted to dismantle the education system of the state. “It is an attack on the rights of Punjab, after an attempt to destroy Punjab’s agriculture and water resources,” he added. Appealing to political parties, he said that leaders should come on a single platform “for the sake of saving the prestigious institution.”

These students have been protesting outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office for over 30 days now. The tenure of the Senate ended on October 31, and as of now, elections have not been notified. Multiple political leaders, including Punjab Vidhan Sabha LoP Partap Singh Bajwa, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari, Patiala MP Dharamvira Gandhi, Anandpur Sahib MP Malwinder Kang, Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh, Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira, Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh, former minister Jagmohan Kang, Shiromani Akali Dal working president Balwinder Singh Bhunder, former Punjab education minister Daljit Cheema, and various others have reached the protest site in support of the students’ demands. The protesters have announced to block Gate No. 2 of the university campus on Tuesday, and have claimed that they will be supported by other non-student organisations.
