Mohali, April 15

The police arrested two drivers of private vehicles, which were parked at a hospital in Phase 9, after 29 bottles of imported liquor and four cartons of beer were recovered from the cars this morning. The drivers have been identified as Jagdeep and Gursewak Singh, both residents of Pawala village in Fatehgarh Sahib district.

A case under the Excise Act has been registered at the Phase 8 police station. Both suspects were produced before a court, which remanded them in one-day police custody.

Meanwhile, relatives of both drivers alleged that the latter had nothing to do with the liquor. Both had joined duty here three days ago for Rs. 10,000 each, and this morning, they were asked to go to Jammu. They claimed that during this period of time, both drivers did not take the cars outside the hospital. They reached the hospital for duty on their motorcycle.

According to police sources, the cost of one carton of the imported liquor was about Rs. 84,000 and it was hidden under the banners of the hospital in both vehicles.

According to the footage of CCTV cameras of the hospital, both Jagdeep and Gursevak are seen coming on a motorcycle at 4 am. At 4.30 am, they made an entry in the register. Both are seen cleaning the car and at 5.45 am, they are arrested by the police as the keys of the vehicles were with them.

Ajitesh Kaushal, Phase 8 SHO, said at the time of the raid, the keys of the car were with both drivers, so they were arrested. He said it was being verified in whose name these vehicles were registered.

Hospital’s Deputy CEO Prabhjot Singh refused to comment on this. However, he said police investigation was going on in the case. —
