Golf League: Panthers, Captain’s 18 joint winners
For the first time in the three-year-old history, the title of the Chandigarh Golf League ended up having a joint winner, despite five playoff holes.
Partee Panthers and Captain’s 18 underwent five playoffs at Chandigarh Golf Club. Both teams halved their seven games and shared a point in one four-ball game. Jubilee Chandigarh Gladiators secured third place by winning a tense five-hole playoff against Cee Dee The Mulligans.
Rabiya Gill won 3&2 against IS Atwal for Panthers, and Kanwal Bajwa caused an upset with a point back against K Raghav Bhandari for the Captain’s 18. Panthers’ Ramnik Tiwana and Flt Lt Sukhinder Singh, along with Simarinder Singh and Bharat Bhandari, won their games easily. Captain’s Bhupinder Mundh and Rajiv Moudgil paired along with Padamjit Sandhu and Pukhraj Brar to bring their team to level again. In the penultimate game, Yadvinder Bains along with Wg Cdr LS Sandhu squared against Rohit Mittal and Sanjam Harish.
In playoff, Rabiya and K Raghav Bhandari (Panthers) faced Sandhu and Kanwal Bajwa (Captain’s 18). In first playoff hole, Rabiya went for a birdie, while Sandhu put the score at par. After the third hole, Bhandari missed a short. The sudden death fourth hole saw Bajwa recovered to make up. Rabiya unfortunately missed the fifth hole. Bajwa again recovered to make a nett par, while Bhandari’s 15 feet putt lipped out to halve the hole.
Owing to poor light, both teams decided to share the trophy.
Gladiators secure third position
Meanwhile, Mulligans couldn’t get over the line as Bismad Singh won his singles 3&2 after being 4-down at the halfway stage. Brig PPS Dhillon won 4&3 in the singles for the Gladiators, while Col VP Singh and Lt Gen BS Sachar and Inderpreet Singh and Jaspartap Sekhon log win. Gauhar Pruthi and Fateh Singh Dhillon came back with a 6&5 win for Mulligans, followed by another stunning performance by SS Matharoo and APS Kahai, who closed a 4&2 win. The match went into a playoff as the last game was halved, Angad Sangha and Col Harjeet Singh made a comeback being 2 down with 3 to play. The first four holes were halved and Col SDS Batth and Brig PPS Dhillon won the 5th playoff hole after surviving Bismad Singh and Gauhar Pruthi’s charge on the three previous holes.
