Mohali Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has written a letter to the Chief Administrator of Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), requesting it to temporarily allocate a space for green waste management.

In his letter, Bedi said, “Due to the festive season and the changing weather, people were cutting their bushes and the Municipal Corporation is also trimming trees. Apart from this, green waste also comes from various housing societies and parks, but the Municipal Corporation does not have any space for managing this horticultural waste.”

Lack of space to manage green trash

Due to the festive season and the changing weather, people were cutting bushes at their homes and the Municipal Corporation is trimming trees. Apart from this, green waste also comes from various housing societies and parks, but the civic body does not have any space to manage this horticultural waste. More than a dozen trolleys of green waste come out of the city every day, but due to the lack of space, piles of green waste have accumulated in various places, which is becoming an eyesore.

“GMADA has not given any solid waste ground for Mohali. Besides, the dumping ground of Mohali has been closed for last several months on the instructions of the court. A contract has been signed to collect garbage from RMC points and this work will start soon, but the Mohali Municipal Corporation has no arrangement for green waste management because there is no space for it,” he said. He requested the CA to provide space for green waste management on a regular basis so that the appearance of the city was not affected adversely.

Sukhdev Patwari of Ward No. 34 said, “Garbage dumps have become a common sight in Mohali. Look at Sector 70, every residential society, commercial hub and urban area have with garbage dumps these days. The Mohali Municipal Corporation has to find a permanent and effective solution to this problem.”
