Faced with boycott threat, BJP nominee tries to placate trans-Ghaggar residents

Two days after people living across the Ghaggar (Sectors 23- 28 and 31) announced to not vote for BJP candidate Gian Chand Gupta and INLD nominee Kshitij Chaudhary since they had not turned up for an all-party debate on the Jhuriwala dumping ground, the incumbent legislator was seen in a damage control mode today.

During a press conference, Gupta listed a slew of works carried out in the trans-Ghaggar sectors. He said people were misleading others on the matter of the dumping ground in Sector 23. Gupta said, “The Sector 23 dumping ground came up during the tenure of Congress’ Chander Mohan. We, on the other hand, floated a Rs 22 crore tender and cleared the site. Others are doing politics on it, while we have cleared the waste from the site. Waste is being transported from the Jhuriwala site to Patvi in Ambala district within 24 hours.”

The residents had claimed that Gupta failed to reach the venue of the debate despite an invite, while the legislator stated that he was not invited in the first place. Chaudhary too claimed that he had not received any call or invite from anyone for the debate.

Listing works undertaken in sectors across the Ghaggar, Gupta said a Sanskrit senior secondary school was set up in Sector 26 besides a multi-skill centre, National Institute of Fashion Technology and other institutes were opened. He said the BJP also set up a government engineering college and international shooting range in Sector 32. “We established community centres in Sectors 23 and 27,” he added.

Gupta said, “We built a bhawan for senior citizens, a working women hostel and a multi-featured park in Sector 27 and a 262 kV substation in Sector 32. Such facilities were not there in sectors across the Ghaggar before 2014.”

BJP candidate for the Panchkula Assembly seat Gian Chand Gupta said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will address a rally at the open ground behind Agarwal Bhawan in Sector 16, Panchkula, on September 30, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address party workers online on September 26.
