Dashmesh hockey fest begins

Lovely Professional University (LPU), Jalandhar, defeated Jarkhar Academy, Ludhiana, 5-0 in the opening match of the Dashmesh Hawks All-India Hockey Festival.

LPU player Jaspreet Singh scored the first goal of the match through a field goal in the 18th minute. Aman Thakur (40th minute) and Gursewak Singh (50th minute) extended the lead with penalty corners. Tushar and Suraj scored two field goals in the 54th minute and 58th minute, respectively, to make the score 5-0.

As many as 12 teams from the region are taking part in the hockey festival. The Punjab Police band entertained the crowd with their performance during the event.

BSF Jalandhar defeated Jarkhar Academy, Ludhiana, to win the title last time. Advocate SS Saini, general secretary, and Jasbir Singh Rai, secretary, said, “This hockey tournament is played passionately by players from the region. Very big crowds come daily to witness these matches. The final match will be played on November 24.” Anandpur Sahib MP Malwinder Singh Kang today gave a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the construction of a boundary wall around the ground, they added.

Rupnagar MLA Dinesh Chadha, Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, and other officials were present on the inauguration.
