Chandigarh: Elderly couple loses Rs 75L to fraudsters

Chandigarh, February 4

An elderly couple has fallen victim to a fraud and lost Rs 75 lakh. Bhag Singh (88) and his wife Jagdish Kaur, who reside in Sector 46, became the victims of scammers who dupe gullible people claiming that their relatives settled abroad are in trouble.

The couple had received a call from some person who claimed that their relative settled in Canada was in jail. Soon, the fraudster made another call and asked for money to get the couple’s nephew, Pamma, released from the jail.

The couple, through multiple transactions, transferred a total of Rs 75 lakh to separate bank accounts as asked by the fraudster. When the couple realised that they had been cheated, they reported the matter to the police.
