Mohali, April 18

Councillors expressed concern over the sanitation situation in Mohali during an MC House meeting here today.

The councillors said janitors had been shifted from internal roads to main roads, which was adversely affecting the sanitation system of the city. Former Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi said the Sanitation Department of the MC was not working to its fullest in removing garbage from roadsides, parks and dumps in the city. He said the MC was losing on sanitation as garbage dumps were visible all over — on roadsides, parks and other places. He demanded that the MC should address the sanitation issue to give a clean and hygienic atmosphere to residents. In reply, Municipal Commissioner Kamal Garg said the problem had arisen due to untimely award of the contract for mechanical sweeping. Besides, the main roads were filled with leaves falling from trees.

The cleaning of main roads was important due to which sanitation workers had been shifted to the main roads.

Mayor Amarjit Singh Jiti Sidhu asked all councillors to cooperate with the MC. He said a resolution on mechanised sweeping was passed today and with the issuance of a work order, the issue would be resolved. He said outsourcing of janitors was also being done as an alternative arrangement and this would also solve the problem.

Meanwhile, all resolutions were passed at the meeting unanimously. Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal, Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi and other officials were present. A resolution regarding taking over of the newly constructed roads by GMADA within the MC limits was also passed. The Mayor informed that Sector 48, 65, 68 and 71 had already been handed over to the MC, but due to non-completion of road work in these sectors, these roads were not handed over to MC. The maintenance work of the completed roads was now being handed over to MC.

A resolution was passed to challan residential, commercial buildings or those under construction, which were responsible for breeding of mosquitoes. Under this, if a mosquito breed is found in a building, the

MC will challan and impose a fine on the owners. —
