Consumer court orders packers and movers Rs 15,000 fine to Mohali resident

District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh, has directed New Chandigarh Packers and Movers in Transport Area, Sector 26, to pay compensation of Rs 15,000 to a Mohali resident for damaging a dining table during transportation.

Ambresh Kumar Shivaji, in the complaint filed before the commission said that on August 28, 2020, said he had availed the services of New Chandigarh Packers and Movers for shifting his household items from Sector 65 to IISER in Sector 81. The charges for the services were Rs 7,500.

Immediately, upon shifting the items, Ambresh paid the agreed amount of through GPay.

However, while unpacking the items, he found that the packers and movers had damaged the dining table and one of the chairs.

Ambresh immediately brought the matter to the notice of the firm, shared pictures of the damage and asked for a compensation but to no avail.

Alleging that the acts amount to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice of the packers and movers, he filed a consumer complaint.

On the other hand, the firm denied allegations.

After hearing the arguments, the Commission said that the packers and movers, being a service provider and having charged consideration, was bound to safely load/unload the household items entrusted to them and if any loss was caused to the items/articles during the process, the firm should have suitably compensated the complainant for the same.

But the packers and movers has failed to do the same.

In view of this, the firm is directed to pay compensation of  Rs 15,000 to the complainant alongwith 6 per cent interest per annum from the date of filing of the consumer complaint till the date of its actual realisation.
