Chandigarh, February 19

The city Congress today protested against Narendra Modi-led government over alleged misuse of Central agencies and the Income Tax Department for political reasons.

Former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky, MC councillors and party’s senior leaders and workers participated in the protest held outside the office of the Income Tax Department in Sector 17 here.

The Congress men protested freezing of bank account of the All India Congress Committee terming it as uncalled for knee-jerk reaction of the Modi government after the Supreme Court of India pronounced controversial electoral bonds as illegal and unconstitutional.

Speaking on the occasion, Bansal alleged, “The BJP has forced the Income Tax Department to target the Congress party for receiving small donations from some of its MPs in cash about six years ago. The action is politically motivated. While the coffers of the BJP are full with funds received through illegal electoral bonds, the Congress is getting finances through crowd funding, wherein lakhs of party workers are donating small amounts of money to the party.”

The former minister alleged, “The Union government is scared of the electoral consequences of 10 year of its ‘misrule’, coupled with rising popularity of the Congress party and its leader Rahul Gandhi. This is the precise reason why the BJP is bent upon creating obstacles in the Congress campaign highlighting the real issues of the people.”

Lucky alleged, “The BJP today threatens all those people who try to expose its divisive and communal policy by implicating them in false cases.”
