Chandigarh shuttler Samarveer Sharma won silver medal during the Lagos International Classics 2024 held in Nigeria. In the final, Sharma gave a tough fight to Le Duc Phat of Vietnam before facing a 10-21, 21-18, 20-22 defeat. Phat’s current world ranking is 68 and represented Vietnam in the 2024 Summer Olympics and was the country’s flag bearer.

Earlier in the semifinal, Sharma defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dang 17-21, 21-18, 21-19. In the quarterfinal, he posted a majestic win against Africa’s top ranking player Anu Opeyori (ranked 103 in world), who had recently captained the Nigerian team in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sharma recorded a 21-14, 21-12 win against him.

Sharma is being coached by Vivek Sharma in the Tricity Shuttlers Badminton Academy, Dhakoli (Zirakpur), and was also felicitated for his outstanding achievements in the recent national and international tournaments. He was awarded on the National Sports Day by the UT Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria, at the Punjab Raj Bhawan.
