Chandigarh pugilist Krrishpal confirms medal in World Boxing Championship
In a proud moment for the city, local pugilist Krrishpal has reached into the semifinals of the U-19 World Boxing Championship in Colorado, US.
Krrishpal who trains under UT Sports Department coach Bhagwant Singh confirmed a medal for the country by defeating Jacob Friend of Australia 4-1 and Mohammed Abdessamed Yahiaoui of Algeria by RSC.
In quarterfinal, he defeated Joseph Turner of England in the second round by RSC to reach the semis. In the final-four, he will face a boxer from the host country on October 31 at 4 am.
Earlier, Krrishpal (51kg) won a bronze medal at the Youth World Boxing Cup at Bodva, Montenegro, and became the junior National Champion. He was also awarded Best Boxer of the Junior National Boxing Championship 2021 and represented the Indian junior boxing team in Asian Championships twice.
Krrishpal participated in the 46kg Junior Asian Boxing Championship, at Amman, Jordan, won the gold medal. He also won gold in the 50kg category in the SGFI Nationals at Akola.
“A Class 12 student of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35-B, Chandigarh, Krrishpal has brought laurels to the country and trains at the Sector 56 Boxing Coaching Centre under Coach Bhagwant Singh who is assisted by coaches Jai Hind and Pankaj Chauhan,” said Charanjit Singh Virk, general secretary, Chandigarh Amaetur Boxing Association.
Krrishpal had lost his father in 2020 and since then his elder brother Gaurav Pal takes care of him.
